Hello...

what a common yet weird beginning...

From wordorigins.org:

hello
Dave Wilton, Sunday, July 02, 2006
It’s often stated that hello was
created specifically for the telephone; that we didn’t have this word prior to
Bell’s invention. This is not quite true.
It is true that the spelling and
pronunciation of hello is only as old as the telephone. From John Hay’s The
Breadwinners of 1883:
Hello, Andy! you asleep.
Kipling’s Letters of
Travel records a telephonic use from 1892:
A . . . millionaire . . . clawing
wildly at the telephone . . . "Hello! . . . Yes. Who’s
there?"
But, this does not account for earlier variants. For over a century
prior to this, halloo served the function of a simple word of greeting and hello
is simply a variation on this older form. From the Proceedings of the Old Bailey
from 27 February 1765:
I had my lanthorn under my coat; I opened my coat and
drew it out: I said, halloo, my friend, what have you got here?
And halloo
can be found in common conversational use in the Proceedings of the Old Bailey
from 16 May 1833:
When he came in he said, "Halloo Harry," in a friendly
way, holding out his hand––I said, "Halloo George, who should have thought of
seeing you here."
There are many other early variants of halloo, used as
hunting crys, calls of alarm, and the like, although none served the greeting
function that hello does today. The earliest of these variants is hollo, which
dates to at least 1588 when Shakespeare used it in Titus Andronicus (II.i):
Hollo, what storme is this?

BIO PROJECT. i stayed up till like 2am finishing it man, i did Dopamine...

Dopamine is a phenethylamine. It’s chemical name is 4-(2-aminoethyl) benzene-1,2-diol (C6H3(OH)2-CH2-CH2-NH2) and it is abbreviated "DA.". It is naturally produced by the human body. In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter. Dopamine controls the flow of information in the brain, especially the feelings associated with pleasure and enjoyment.
Abnormally high levels of dopamine are strongly linked to conditions such as psychosis and schizophrenia. Low levels of dopamine have been found in patients with Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).
Dopamine is used as a medication to treat patients with diseases such as Parkinson's disease, depression and Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).
Narcotic drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines also lead to increased levels of dopamine, thus producing artificial pleasure in the drug takers. Because of this, these drugs become addictive, and are controlled drugs in Singapore. Misuse of these drugs is a punishable offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Arvid Carlsson won a share of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine for demonstrating the role of dopamine as a neurotransmitter. Arvid Carlsson and Jils-Ake Hillarp discovered dopamine at the Laboratory for Chemical Pharmacology of the National Heart Institute of Sweden in 1952.

yep...

yesterday there was a speech comp. i emailed my pen pal fm US about it

we just had a speech competition today... man they were good...(my computer suddenly refuses to type exclamation marks)... the topic was women... many ppl did the stereotyping of women, the perception of women...women n beauty... there was one really good one by our head prefect called "Women are like tomatoes". she used a made-up analogy "women are like tomatoes" and she said the outside, being glossy and beautiful n sophisticated represented how women are like on the outside and how they are perceived... sophisticated, beautiful and confident. the inside of the tomato, being sticky and full of liquid, was the feelings we tend to hide inside because we aren't as aggressive as men who let all their feelings out, and we were intuitive. and the skin, what held us together, she said it was gossip, because she said we gossiped to relieve stress and anger...
her speech was very good and she said it very well(exclamation mark)
but she only got 2rd place for her category... i guess the person in the 1st place WAS better than her... in the 1st place was this british girl who used all these chim words and was very eloquent... (chim = deep/difficult/sounds very smart)

XD... Hannah Lee... british girl ... i guess it was true... her sis JESS (ex-classm8) was GOOD ... SUPER...

but 1G's COLETTE WAS MAGNIFICENT TOO... but i guess Jess has had more "training" in this... LOL

YAY JESS... glory to 6.4'06? or rather to her 1H'07 XD

but still ... hahaz
